pointed to the recently dug graves, four of them. With a quick but
quiet approach, he removed the gun in the rim of his jeans. Come on
out! Deon yelled.
Nothing. Crickets were louder.
Then there was a sharp gasp and a single breathy word.
Chase?
A short figure ran from the nearest wreckage of a house. Deon
trained his gun on it but Chase ran in the fucking way. Damn it! He
hissed the words, finger on the trigger. The two figures closed the
distance quickly and the love of Deon s life wrapped his arms around
another person. Who the hell was this?
It s okay, Chase said. He turned with the stranger in his
arms.
The little thing was a woman, barely a girl. A light bulb went
off in Deon s head. She was girl that the bastard had naked and
paraded in front of the hanging Chase. She a friend of yours? Deon
took his finger off the trigger but kept the gun in his hand.
Yes! Chase was grinning like a fool. Deon, meet the only
woman in my life, Lykinna.
Deon glanced at her. She was about five foot tall with long
flowing blonde hair and ash smudges on her cheeks. Deon held out
his hand.
The girl backed up then gave a small forced smile and looked
to Chase.
Great, my first friend, Deon muttered but neither seemed to
hear him.
What happened here? Chase asked her.
She lifted her chin proudly. I did. I thought...I thought they
killed you. They said you were dead and that big black man stole your
body.
Deon grunted.
I...I set the leaders house on fire. Her chin dropped and her
bottom lip quivered. It spread. I didn t know fire could spread so fast
and soon it was all up in smoke. She gently shook her head.
Everyone ran. They scattered and left. I buried those that
couldn t...get out and...
You didn t leave? Chase asked gently.
I don t have anywhere to go, she whispered. You re my
only friend.
Chase nodded, hugged her close and turned to Deon. Well,
now she has two. Right, baby?
Yeah. Deon tried for a smile and it seemed to work because
she looked at him. Friends.
What will we do? she asked, but didn t seem to address it to
either of them.
Chase grinned. We rebuild and we make this world better and
safer. He let go of Lykinna and moved to Deon s side.
He was only too happy to wrap his arms around the man he
loved. Together...
My sexy three hour man, Chase said with a grin. We
rebuild, together.
